There are a lot of taxis in New Zealand. You can get around by bus, train, boat, and tram. Hitching and Ride-sharing is not safe and I do not recommend it.
To get from your home to New Zealand you could fly or take a boat.
The major airports to fly into are -
Auckland airport
Christchurch airport
Wellington airport
Queenston airport
Dunedin airport
Auckland airport is the busiest and the largest.
